Don, You have expressed what the marketplace confirms - people who want more (ie: clear documentation) in an OS will pay more to get it. MS Windows and products deliver the goods in that department, Apple even more so in an odd way.
Linux will never be mainstream until it reaches outside its community and serves the popular marketplace. Since there is limited commercialization to cultivate the product, it's unlikely that it will happen.
