Sounds like an alignment is needed to place the IF in the middle of the passband and not near an end.

If on receive, that vintage of K2 needs the 2nd XFIL flattening mod as the first step. It takes out the "tilt" in that filter (used only on receive) that makes the audio sound bassy on one sideband and tinny on the other.
