The contact doesn't exist in a vacuum and is thus potentially exposed to whatever exists in the air at that location. Over time, regardless, the connections may require maintenance. Example: I flew as Aircrew for the Navy. Most of our gear was sealed. Even being sealed a re-seat of a circuit card or cleaning of the edge fingers often brought faulted gear back into functional status. Perhaps if we create d a vacuum around our gear it wouldn't be as much of an issue?
