Fred,

Look in the manual and on page 5, top of the second column, you will see the
K2 'Frequency Ranges' listed. We commonly refer to those as 'bands' 3.5 to
4 MHz is the 80 meter band, 7 to 7.3 is the 40 meter band, ... 28.0 to 28.8
is the K2 10 meter band (the actual amateur allocation goes up to 29.7 MHz).
The BAND+ and BAND- buttons are the same as the old-fashioned bandswitch -
think of it as stepping from one band to another, just like the rotary
switch would move one band for each detent position, the BAND+ and BAND-
buttons move one band up or down each time it is tapped.

The K2 shows the frequency on the LCD display, and you can move within a
band with the VFO knob (note that the frequency changes when rotating the
knob)

When you tap the BAND+ or BAND- the frequency display will indicate the band
that the K2 is tuned too - unless you have moved the VFO knob in an attempt
to move from one band to another - and that will mess up the band
selection - you can do a Direct Frequency Entry to get it back on the
correct band. The K2 will tune a bit outside the amateur bands, but if you
try to go too far, the K2 will not actually tune because of the width of the
bandpass filters and the limits of the VFO tuning range - the displayed
frequency WILL continue to change well outside the bands, but the K2 will
not actually be changing frequency.
