This is one of those, "it depends" situations.  Depending on the location of the two center conductor insulators in the plug and socket, the serrated (toothed) surface of the female connector might well contact the mating plug surface, if there is a gap between the insulators. In fact the "tighten it with pliers" crowd might actually be forcing this connection and mistakenly believing that they are improving the connection via the threads.
