Since it is a K3"S", it is probably C102 on the front panel shorting and
taking the contrast voltage down.

Here are my notes;
LCD backlight is on, but no segments are lit or visible, usually K3S.
(K3 see below) Or poor Contrast.
C102 E530223 on Front panel is shorted, 10 uF,10V,20%,CERM,0805,SMD
Fix; You can deftly replace it by reaching in with a fine tip and steady
hand without even taking the FP off.
It is on the back of the front panel board near the top-slightly off-center.
**For K3, Could be C102, but typically shorted C35 E530290 on bottom RF
board (front corner near 5V regulator). Right side of radio will be
unusually warm, 5 volts will be low.
Check the 8 and 5 volts on the two regulators U13 E600163 and U12
E600162 that bolt to the right side panel, they could be bad or
something shorted on those lines. Ohms to ground when off is approx.
(depends on options) both 240 ohms on each.
