I swap out the batteries in my KX1 before going out for some extended
operation. Otherwise they are in the rig at all times - on the road, sitting
on the shelf, etc.

I'd pull them out if I were going to store it for a couple of years.
Otherwise they stay in.

Greetings List,

I'm about to depart for a week long backpacking trip with my new KX1 and was
wondering: If you backpack with a KX1 and power it with internal batteries,
do yo remove the internal batteries when not in use, or do you just package
the rig up so that the front panel switches cannot be activated?

Mine is packaged up in a Pelican case with extra padding added to keep the
rig from bouncing around inside. I have all batteries installed except one.
There is a space carved out in the extra foam to store that single AA
battery when the rig is not in use. lt will be reinstalled when I'm ready
to power the rig, then removed again when I'm done to avoid draining the
batteries or creating a fire hazard should the unit develop a short circuit
somewhere. Am I being too cautious?

Thanks, and listen for me from the Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimarron, New
Mexico this Sunday thru Thursday on 20 or 40 meters. I'll try and operate in
the late afternoon and evenings MDT after we make camp (unless the OM/OP is
just too tired from the hike).
