Ken, I would suggest a better USB to serial adapter - or if possible, use a desktop computer with a real serial port. If your USB to serial adapter is connected to a USB hub, that might be a problem - several folks have reported miscellaneous mysteries occurring with that combination, but they sometimes disappear when connected to a native USB port.
