I had been having problems with my KAT100 and hoped the KPA100 upgrade
would help. I installed the upgrade and all works well with an external
tuner other than the KAT100. But, the KAT100 problems persist.
Here's the problem. The KAT100 tunes fine on all bands into my 50 ohm
dummy load if I set the power to 10 watts. But, if I set it to 11
watts, engaging the KPA100 build into my K2, the bands 160m through 40m
won't tune correctly.
On 160m I get just one LED lighting at a time and the relays search for
a match. The resulting match is 9.9:1.
On 80m no LEDs light as the relays click searching for a match. The
resulting match is 9.9:1
On 40m one LED lights as it searches for a match. The resulting match
is 1.4:1. But, when operating full power, only one LED lights at a time
and the LED that's lit changes every second or less.
On 30m and above the KAT100 tunes fine but the match can be as much as
1.4:1, though most are 1:1.
When operating full power, all LEDs light with each key stroke. On some
bands all but the last 2 or 3 light when you are keying. In QRP mode
about half light when you are keying. There is no high SWR warning.
There seems to be some power reduction at full power.
Again, all of the things above are into a 50 ohm dummy load. Using a
real antenna I get the same problems.
These symptoms are not always consistent, but there is always a problem.
Sometimes when tuning on one of the lower bands, especially 40m, if the
tuner had a tough time tuning, the KDSP2 will report that it is not
installed. Turning the K2 off and then on restores the KDSP2.
Individual component testing at 10m, 20 watts
L0 - L8 SWR = 9.9:1
C0 = 4:1
C1 = 3:1
C2 = starts at 4:1 climbs to 6:1
C3 = 8:1
C4,C5,C6,C7,n1,n2 = 9.9:1
Individual component testing at 40m, 20 watts
All components show 9.9:1
Suggestions on where to start greatly appreciated.
