There have been a lot of posts on this - look for USB in the archives. However, what works well? KUSB from Elecfrat and Keyspan, of all the adapters on the market, Keyspan seem to be the most reliable.
On why didn't they - lots on that too, but for one thing, USB is licensed (adding cost) and you have to pick a particular chip set. Foe another, a lot of Hams don't have USB and its harder/more expensive to go serial to USB.
