It's an LCD in that it's a liquid crystal display - that's the technology, but driving a pure LCD dot matrix display takes a lot more power, a lot more programming etc - it's not a TV screen. An awful lot of electronics these days does not have a completely programmable display, it has areas which 'light' up, but its a predefined pattern of crystals. It's also difficult (read expensive) to get good resolution in such small icons - look at the resolution of VFOB display to get an idea.
