I agree with Andrea here, Pantheon Files soindslike a horrible name and would
draw back many users.

I personally think pantheon-files is a terrible name.
Marlin is already widely used by many users in several distros other than
elementary and they'll use our version since Marlin is discontinued, now.
Keeping using Marlin sounds good, even though could be a bit unfair if ammonkey
doesn't want us to do that. I see no point in calling it pantheon-files, I
don't like the idea of marking it as ours. It's against open-source philosophy,
doesn't help convincing other distros to use it and I personally would never
install an app which is marked by someone else. You know, it makes it sound us
like a bit of douchebags.  Plus, its function is already clear because we
decided to change the icon to something clearer, like a folder (don't know if
pantheon-files already has that).

Andre Luis, I'm not sure about that, we need to release a beta shortly and this
would really slow us down.

Andrea Basso

Going by the 'standard' having a unique name for file browser makes sense. It
will feel inconsistent otherwise. Also for people who install more than one
file browser, similar names would be frustrating.
i propose 'Magellan' if people are convinced not to use Marlin.

I agree with Christian. I know Canonical will be considering Marlin for 12.10,
and I think it will be good if the name is distinctive. 'Files' or 'Briefcase'
is the opposite of distinctive; Files is also being used as a name by Gnome
Shell (for Nautilus), and remember briefcases from Windows 9x? It's fine if you
use 'Files' for the application as you use 'Terminal' for Pantheon Terminal,
but the name itself should be unique.

I think "Files" is a fine name; it's not made to be a particularly
cross-platform app, and any time in doubt you could call it by it's more
specific name, "Pantheon Files." Similar to how "Terminal" is really "Pantheon
Terminal." But in this case I think naming it what the user would expect is
more advantageous than the potential branding opportunity.

In fact, it could even be a bigger "branding" opportunity; imagine if Ubuntu
moved from Nautilus to Pantheon Files! It'd be the best of both worlds because
developers would hear about Pantheon while users would get a more sensible name.

He's been non-responsive about our attempts to use the LP project. My guess is

I do think that Marlin is kind of a silly name that won't make sense to anyone
who isn't a big geek about Linux File Managers :p

Not terribly concerned with promoting outside of elementary though, tbh. You
know me :p

Is it no option to stick to Marlin, and actually continue it in honor of
its original author? am may have lost interest, but it's still a great
project he put in place there. Unless he is in fact opposed to that.

I think "Files" is a bad name. It may make sense to display in the UI,
but it's a mess when you want to actually discuss Mail, Files, Session
and Launcher - you get the idea. Not to mention it's impossible to
promote outside of Elementary.
