I think I have this straight now.

If I customize it as above (actually, to a list containing 
~/.emacs_case_exceptions), restart Emacs, and load a .gpr file then everything 
works just fine.


I’ve noticed that there are what may be old build-related customizations in the 
Ada group; are these traces of ada-mode 4.01 which the ELPA installation 
mechanism hasn’t removed? ...
