(what a confession), so my primary reference for 42 is indeed the
Jargon File.
Well, now you have another reason to give it a try.

The audio version is the best; I first heard it on American NPR when I
was in grad school (many, many moons ago). That's a slightly edited
version of the original BBC broadcast. I saved that on cassette tape for
years, then finally bought the BBC version on CD. I like the American
version better! (possibly because I practically memorized it).
