./compile runs configure with some special arguments.  You might need  
them for things to work.  Best bet is to rm config.log and/or  
Makefile at the top level (one of these, I forget which, is used by  
compile to check whether configure should be run), then run compile.

Please, anyone who wants to help remove the need for nextstep/ 
compile, go ahead.  I don't entirely like the way the Carbon port  
does things in this department either though, but this is an open- 
source project, if others would like to do it that way and do the  
work, I'm fine with it.
