He has a local version of ncurses on his system that is not universal,  
but is being found before the system-supplied one is.  I'm not sure  
how common this type of setup is, but judging from some other reports,  
he's not the only one.  Currently removing the -arch options in  
nextstep/compile fixes it.

The need for this compile script should be eliminated, and the default  
build made nonuniversal.  Only distributors should need to build  
universal binaries.
