Thanks, that worked. I noticed something seemed to be happening that was
related to a font I specify in a setupfile, so I removed that, but that did not
make the preview appear. The math fragment is:
\begin{math}
(0, 3, 9, 27, 81, 243, ...)
\end{math}
I did as you suggested. I got a "Precompiling Org LaTeX preamble..." note in
the minibuffer that stayed for several minutes until I thought something was
wrong and checked the other buffers.

(I looked at that SVG file. It is the number 5, which is curious, because it

there are none in /tmp/.
