Thanks for keeping on with this. But that didn't help either, I'm afraid. I
stripped it all down to something reproducible, which I hope helps.
In the Org source tree I ran "make repro", then loaded in this small file:

#+title: Threes
\begin{math}
(0, 3, 9, 27, 81, 243, ...)
\end{math}
# -----
Then:
M-x org-latex-preview mode
;; move pointer to powers of three
M-x org-latex-preview
No preview shows: an empty box appears after the end{math}.
Running "M-x org-latex-preview-clear-cache" or setting
org-latex-preview-process-precompile to nil didn't change that. Buffers copied
in below. I hope this helps you tell whether or not it's just something about
my system.
