In both cases, I suggest to use LaTeX environments instead: \begin{equation*} x = y + 1 \end{equation*} and \begin{equation*} x = \begin{array}{cc} y & u \\ z & v \end{array} \end{equation*} Regards, -- Nicolas Goaziou
