One more data point.  I don't use a desktop environment as such.  I use
/ratpoison/ as my window manager.  In my use case, on a system running
Ubuntu 13.04, xdg-open works perfectly fine, both synchronously (!) and
asynchronously (&), for all three file types listed above, bringing up
evince, libreoffice and firefox respectively.
