help request: remote rcs broke

I find that (vc-backend-diff (buffer-file-name) nil nil nil) returns
nil if:

  - I load pcl-cvs-2.9.4
  - I'm looking at a remote file which is not locked

The above expression should return 0, I think.  I *know* that it must
be a number.

I think that the different advices get into each other's way.
