Maybe I should try to make copying and renaming files work across
machine boundaries. Do you also think so?

It seems that people have
problems with backups and/or autosave files, so another alternative
would be to try to correct that, rather than trying to make copying
and renaming more general.

Probably the easiest and most general solution would be to make a
local copy of the original file and to then save the local copy
remotely using the new name.

Another idea would be to only have the
temporary copy in a buffer, rather than on disk.
