   logical place to put the local tmp copy is /tmp (well, whatever
   rcp-temporary-file-directory returns) and it is not clear that this
   directory has so much free space.

Well, rcp-temporary-file-directory is intended just to take care of this
problem, right?   So one  should just assume  it works allright.   If it
does not, then one  should try to fix it, but assuming  it does not work
is not wise, in my opinion.
