Well, I'm all for doing it right.  But given the fact that ange-ftp
just returns -1 as user and group id and further given that the user
and group id aren't really used (except by VC), I don't think it is
worth to actually implement the checks for Perl on the remote end and
to wonder whether getpwnam in Perl does the right thing with NIS and
NIS+ and this NeXT NetInfo thing, and so on...

Thanks for all your suggestions.  I had been hoping that there is a
silver bullet, but there does not seem to be.  Oh, well.
