Surely the shell script stuff in question can be put in a function
which is sent just to the shell in question.  But I'm not sure that
solves anything.

Have you got any idea how I would go about finding out whether `ls'
groks the `-n' option?  Maybe that would be the better approach.

Presumably, `ls -x / 1>/dev/null 2>&1 ; echo $?' will tell me if ls
groks the -x option?  If this works, I might want to add a variable to
rcp.el which contains the options wanted as a list, and then I'd try
the options.  Yes, that seems about right.
