I couldn't agree more, except the part about how you're going to choose one
mode and then stick with it.

I like both modes of threading, so if Letters did implement both, then it would
be nice to be able to toggle the thread display mode (flat or full-nested)
while viewing mail (without leaving the window).

I personally use both modes (but currently I have to switch over to Thunderbird
to get nested threads). A lot of times, flat threads are fine, and they are
nice and easy. They make it easier to see the timeline of the conversation. In
a fully nested thread view, a reply one second ago to an older post may not
even be on the screen.

On the other hand, when you really want to grok a real conversation, you want
to see the full details of who said what to whom, and how far along in the
conversation were they when they said that. This is especially true you know
the parties involved (e.g., co-workers) and are trying to absorb how their
thinking is changing, in addition to your own.

If I had to choose just one as a user, I would choose fully nested threads, as
they convey more information.

OTOH, if I had to choose one to program initially, and the plan was to support
both someday, I would probably implement flat threads first because it would
probably be a little less work.

But they're both good in different ways.
