That was my initial reaction. But then I thought about how often I've
searched for something, then wanted to compare the search results with
another email somewhere else, and had to lose the search to find the
latter. Having thought about it, I'm completely in favour of
search-in-a-new-window :)

True, but there are also a lot of times when you're just searching and doing it right in the window you're in is the most convenient thing.

In addition to search, I am often drilled down reading mail in some mailbox in Mail's full viewer window, and then I want to compare what I am reading with something else.

Or search for something, without losing where I am, and then compare (i.e., the reverse of your example).

That's why I love that Mail can create another full-fledged viewer window with Command-Option-N. That capability is one of Mail's best design choices IMO.

It's powerful since the panes of Mail's viewer windows can be collapsed, so you can choose not to have the source list on the left, or the message pane at the bottom.

(Sorry to keep beating my one loud drum...)
