For what it's worth, IMAP is perfectly gmail-friendly, you just need to
activate the option in your Gmail prefs.
Gmail uses its own version of IMAP. It's non-standard.
It supports the base protocol, and a few extensions. I'm not sure that it
actually breaks any RFC.
