There are a vanishingly small number of lists that allow non-members to post.

If it didn't make me a backscatter source I'd reimplement my auto-reply to this 
email address from non-lists, but it does, so I don't. I just mark them as read 
when they arrive. If the list is setup to not send me messages it thinks I 
already got, then I simply never see those replies at all (I read my mail from 
an 'unread' smart box).

This breaks threading, of course. But then the list has already done that. the 
annoying thing (one of them) is that I have an incomplete copy of the list.
