You would be surprised at the number of "Power Users" who prefer html or

Users will expect this default.
I am not so bold as to pretend to speak for all users, but this "power
user" greatly hopes the default will be plain text.
+1
And, I hope that the HTML renderer will let me override font styles, so
that I can read the messages that people are sending me. Outlook used to
specify size=2, which the rest of the world interprets as "one size smaller
than the reader's preferred font size". Given that my preferred font size
is the smallest that I can comfortably read, I've switched both my mail
clients to prefer the plain text part.
Unfortunately, many composition tools don't copy URLs (the "href" attribute
of an "a" tag) into the plain text part, and that's often the most
important information in the email. So, I hope we'll vet any HTML composer
plugins to make sure they don't make that error, or this one:
Outlook tries to copy URLs into plain text parts, and they end up looking
like this:
"www.sussex.ac.uk/enterprise
<blocked::BLOCKED::http://www.sussex.ac.uk/enterprise>"
Leading to much confusion!
