Two quick points:
(1) Are you planning to stay with a Mac? If so, get a dual
USB/Firewire card and start getting USB and Firewire hardware. That way
when you do finally retire your 7300, you will have minimized the legacy
hardware. OS X drivers for SCSI cards for G3 and G4 Macs do exist, but by
definition they are going to go away, and "break" under a subsequent
version of OS X.
(2) I join Michelle in endorsing LaCie's Firewire/USB CD/RW drive.
I'd been leery of LaCie products for 15 years, after a bad experience.
That seems to have been a mistake. The new drive is very nice, very fast
and very reliable. And it _smokes_ with iTunes compared to my elderly APS
drive.
