I read so many posts from people describing problems associated with using Emailer through AOL, TOS problems with AOL, etc. I can't help asking- why do so many bother with AOL?
When I was an internet newbie, AOL provided my training wheels. But after I got slightly more sophisticated, it seemed that AOL's interface served more as a barrier to the net than a help, and then of course there were the problems of not being able to get a dialup connection because they signed up new customers faster than they provided new capacity, and that is what finally ran me off. But I know that you folks that still use AOL are far from newbies, and in fact are much more sophisticated than I am. The contortions that you describe to connect through AOL are beyond me. So there must be some advantage that I don't understand. Is it simply not wanting to change your email address? I have changed ISPs at least four times since I left AOL and I know it can be traumatic, but I don't think there is anyone important to me that doesn't know how to get ahold of me now, so I'm guessing that this can't be the primary explanation. I know this is off topic, and in fact your choice of ISP is really is none of my business. My question is just the result of idle curiousity. If anyone feels moved to reply, perhaps it would be better to do it privately.
