Yeah, no doubt. I thought I knew all of these shortcuts too! 
Ok, NOW I do!  ;-) 
I've usually just dragged the attachment icon from the email to the 
desktop, then used it there, doing a command y to put it back when I'm 
done. 

Option double click is faster & better.
