Thanks to everyone who replied to my inquiry. On a hunch, after booting up this morning, I tried installing a backup copy of Emailer -- just the program, itself, not the whole package.
That apparently has fixed the problem. Emailer worked fine, receiving and sending mail without a hitch. (I'll keep my fingers crossed.) What casued the problem? Could it have been a Norton defrag of the Emailer app? A DSL connection problem at bootup (corrected after a lengthy session with Earthlink Tech Support). I don't know.
