Just to refresh anyone who wonders what prompted that response from Jay, I was having problems with Emailer either shutting itself down or freezing the computer when it checked mail. I had gone through various fixes such as installing Conflict Catcher, upgrading from OS 9.0.4 to 9.2.2, and using specific extension sets. Each solution tended to correct the problem for a short time, but then it would return. I was particularly puzzled by the fact that a given extension set would work for a day or so, but then quit working. Anyway, I took Jay's advice and increased Emailer's memory from the recommended 3500 kb to 5000 kb, and for the last 4 days everything works fine even using the standard extension set. BTW, my mail database is only 37.1 mb, which seems to be small compared to what some of you have mentioned. I hope this simple solution has ended my problems. The only thing I can't reconcile with my experience is Jay's statement that once I restart, the memory problem would be solved for a few sessions. In my case, once the problem started happening with a given extension set, then it would always happen, even after restarts. But I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth, and will be happy if Emailer just keeps working normally, no matter whether I understand why. Thanks Jay.
