Should have >been backing up more frequently...Any ideas?? > This isn't gonna help much with your original problem, but you might get John Carlsen's eMessage Archiver (with the runtime Filemaker Pro or without if you have the full FM Pro) and archive most of your email to trim down the eMailer database. My CE database isn't as big as yours, but I'm getting ready to archive most of mine.
Nice thing with eMArchiver is that you can reply to old emails, forward them, etc. (in Emailer).
