I think it's a bit more complicated. Cron won't probably do anything while the mac is sleeping. I think you need something else to wake it up before, using power manager features that aren't available from the system prefs yet as far as I know and are probably unknown to cron (since it's a unix thing and PCs took 15 years to go from what is basically a 0.5$ quartz watch to a 1$ watch with alarm clock).
