Also, don't confuse encoding with compression. Compression is rarely 
needed.

Encoding is the problem. Use base64.

When you attach a file, there is a pull down "menu" for encoding. Base64 
works for PC's. Just choose that when sending to PC people, or a mixed 
audience.
