Did that email you were quoting into the reply happen to come from an AOL 
user?

AOL does allow line feeds in the email. In fact, the email in question, 
does it have little boxes at the start of every line? Those are line feed 
characters, and your mail server doesn't allow them.

There are applescripts available that will clean the email of those bad 
characters. Check Fog City's web site in their Emailer section. I know 
there was at least one applescript geared towards cleaning line feeds 
from AOL email.
