Back on topic: at age 48 I developed the same problem. I'm naturally short-sighted but, until then, I could see the monitor screen clearly with my glasses on. At age 48 my eyesight changed so I had to sit further back (too far) with my glasses on or get closer (too close) with them off. At the optimum distance for me (19") I couldn't focus with or without glasses.
The answer was to get my optician to make some "monitor" spectacles for me. I hang these on a hook next to the monitor where I can find them whenever I sit down to work.
