We have our phone service with this same company. I would think they would have told us we needed a firewall when we put in the DSL order, would they?

Yeah I agree, hardware is a lot better & easier. In the low price category, I've had better luck with the DLink routers than the LinkSys. If you have any problems at all, remember to make sure the router's firmware is up to date! Hope this helps.

I recently got hi-speed internet and now I need a firewall program.
And I need you to tell me what to get.
I'm running OS 8.6 on my Kanga PowerBook.
Skip the firewall software, and just go with a hardware solution. Unless
you have highly sensitive data and REALLY REALLY need to be sure your
network isn't compromised, just get a SoHo level firewall/router from
your local office supply store or computer store. You should be able to
pick up a wired one for around $50 and one that acts as a wireless access
point for less (WAP ones are constantly on sale or rebates bringing their
prices into the $10-$20 range). LinkSys, Netgear, DLink, Belkin all make
inexpensive and fully capable units.
Software will just breed more headaches. Let the hardware take care of it
and allow yourself to forget all about it.
