I can't speak for anyone else, but in my case, it's because I have some net buddies who don't do IRC and AIM is the only way we can chat online. I won't use Yahoo or MSN, and ICQ strikes me as too user unfriendly. Besides, my net buddies in question also already either use AIM or are on AOL, so AIM is how I chat with them.
