Check and see if you have Classic set to sleep after a period of time. I 
have long suspected that Classic can't actually tell when an application 
is active, and throttles down the its processor usage dramatically when 
your mouse moves out of a window. Also, I think it tries to put Classic 
to sleep even when a Classic app is currently active.

Try turning off the Classic Sleep option and see if the problem goes away.

Well, duh... Classic support has stopped. Apple is no longer doing 
anything to make Classic better, and I strongly suspect that they aren't 
even checking (or at least not caring) when they break something in 
Classic when they update something else.
