The latest version is 1.5.0.2, released within the last month. Your friend should download that from <http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/> and see if the bug he sees has been fixed. If it persists, feel free to contact me off-list with details and I'll search bugzilla to see if it's been reported already. I like Thunderbird too and think that it's the best option for people switching from Claris Emailer.
