The number one thing that Mail.app has going against it is that it was developed by Apple, a company which is happy to mass-market mediocrity, knowing that the majority of Mac users will use whatever is free and easy to access. Your point about not having keystrokes for often used functions continues, year after year, to amaze me. In Emailer (then) and Thunderbird (now), if I close a window and get the dialog box asking me if I want to save the item, I simply hit the "D" key to say "don't save". Try that in Mail.... or any other piece of, uh, Apple software.
