I imagine that you already know this, but in case you don't:
If it is a DUPLICATE of the files, and not an ALIAS of the
files, that you have placed on your desktop, when you change
the one on the desktop, the original WILL NOT change. Once
you make a copy in a different location, you have two
distinct files which do not relate to each other. If you
decide to keep copies on the desktop, trash the ones that
are there now, then go back to the originals and create
aliases of them. Then, when you open the alias on the
desktop, the original will actually be the one that opens.
