I push [shift] [alt] [8]. ° <--- So this should be a "degree" symbol - but don't bank on it. The first 128 ASCII characters are (almost) reliably translated but the rest aren't. (I blame the Americans. Well, I wouldn't want to be different!) I usually type an apostrophe instead of a degree symbol. Everyone understands 30'C (unless he's American, in which case I type 86'F).
