I think you misunderstood what I was saying. This issue relates to spinning up and down the drive on a regular basis which can prematurely kill the drive. However, today's hard drives have such crappy MTBF times, that I'm not sure it makes any difference any more, as they will likely fail in just a few years anyway (weather or not they fail even faster if regularly cycled remains to be seen).
What is the best, leave it running or turn it off once in a while or what?
This is a topic that has been debated for a long time. Personally, I say it is best to leave the machine on all the time. There are pros and cons to this, I've discussed them on this list before, and it should be pretty trivial to turn up information on the topic via a google search.
When you factor in today's Macs with their ability to go to sleep, there becomes almost no reason to turn them off. Also, anything that is "Energy Star" rated is designed to be left on 24x7. In fact, some Energy Star devices don't even have power switches any more. Once you plug them in, they are on all the time. I believe all current Macs and Apple displays are Energy Star rated. Most current CRTs by any maker are, as well as likely most (if not all) LCDs by any maker.
