I hope everybody gives the message of Bill full consideration... independent of what the word processing program it, people should realize that we've been taken on a rollercoaster ride by the software industry to make us believe people need a minimum 80 GB disk and 1 GB RAM memory in order to write letters...
To be honest... most of the time, todays keyboards often contain a processor chip that is capable enough to do wordprocessing. and todays computers spend 90% of their CPU time on other things than the job you think it is doing for you. The Motorola 68020 and 68030 CPU, which is now very old stuff, was powerful enough to design and draw chemical plants for GE, when I worked in the CAD/CAM sector. I do not agree with the ratio of content that is being put into todays office and word packages. They ask for always newer hardware; hey keep doing almost the same thing; and they get heavier because of many add-ons and because the software maker puts 'his agenda' (what the product should do for HIS marketing) into the package. In the average company you will see the latest and greatest computer at the secretary of the board or director; who types 2 letters a day. And you will find used Pentium-II computers with the other secretaries who have to process 20 documents per day. IT management should be more a job of rightsizing. It should not float on the marketing waves and get carried wherever it takes you; but it should oppose those waves. Just as with email, we should keep in mind that even 10 years from now, we can perfectly communicate with the letters of the alphabet, and an attached photo or diagram or video file. So I cannot see why there should come an end to basic programs unless when one ends it for marketing reasons. William D.
