If you take the thumb drive and insert it in a USB jack on your

Oh, that makes me think of something I didn't mention before.
Some USB sticks (thumb drives) draw more power than others, and so
the Mac won't see them if they are connected thru a non powered hub.
This means if you connected the drive via the keyboard's spare USB
port, the Mac won't see the drive. You would have to connect directly
to the Mac or via some other powered USB hub (this is why I never buy
those mini non powered USB hubs).
If the unit is borderline on power consumption then you may see an
error presented telling you there isn't enough power to use the
device (when connected to an unpowered hub) or if it is way over the
power limit, then you may see an error telling you there was too much
power draw and the Mac disabled the port (and now your keyboard
doesn't respond until you remove the drive, and then unplug and
replug the keyboard to reactivate the port).
But all too often, there is no error of any kind reported and the
drive just doesn't show up at all while plugged into an unpowered
hub. This is highly dependent on the USB stick, I've used many of
them that work fine in an unpowered hub (in fact, in my experience,
most work fine plugged into the keyboard's USB port), but I've also
used a few that need to be directly connected to the Mac or another
powered port.
The point to this is, if those two U3 ones you have aren't showing up
at all allowing you to reformat them to something you can use, if you
haven't already, try plugging them directly into the Mac and see if
they show up then.
